We are proud to share with you the following collection
of houses from one of Dolls House Parade's most loyal and long-standing
customers - Mavis Worth.
Mavis is a retired school headmistress and following
her retirement she led a busy life finding time to pursue
her hobbies, which included music and painting etc. Unfortunately
her happy retirement was tragically interrupted when her husband,
Victor, developed cancer. Mavis devoted her time to nursing him
until he passed away in May of 1990. The void left in her life,
by this tragedy needed to be filled and she decided that there was
enough time in her busy life to add another hobby to the already
long list.
So it was that her dolls house collection started
in 1991. One thing led to another and the projects flowed thick
and fast - often being based on memories from her own life, such
as the grocers her parents used to own; the pub from the local village;
the school which formed such a large part of her life; and the church
where she was married. Before long it was getting to the stage where
a "town planner" was needed.
Mavis decided to devote a room in her house for her
expanding "town" and she now saw an opportunity where
her hobby could not only give her pleasure but also benefit others.
Since the death of Victor, Mavis had worked tirelessly at fund raising
for various charities. Her idea was to create a small museum, which
the public could visit, and by asking her guests for a small donation
this could go straight to charity. As usual Mavis willingly gave
her time and hospitality freely and to date hundreds of visitors
have seen the collection and contributions totaling more than £5,500
have been raised for various good causes.
Rather than support just one charity Mavis prefers
to spread her donations. These have included the Macmillan Cancer
Fund, Parkinson's Disease Charity, and donations are currently being
given to help purchase audio equipment for physically and mentally
impaired children. Mavis has one main concern when she deals with
a charity - and that is that she can actually see the money being
put to good use, which is why she now concentrates on smaller charity
projects. With these she can actually go and see the benefits of
her work.
We hope you will enjoy a stroll through Mavis Worth's
